FAQ
The first session is about 90 minutes. We will spend the first part of that time exploring your past and present state of health, including medical history, family history, and your future vision or goals for your health.
For a comprehensive diagnosis and treatment plan, we include pulse and tongue diagnosis, and when appropriate, palpate areas of concern.
After the initial intake, you will receive an acupuncture treatment. This involves insertion of sterile hair-thin needles at specific acupuncture points along the meridians.
The needles should not hurt; you may feel a prick or tingling, or a heavy sensation, but discomfort is minimal. Many clients report feeling deeply relaxed and often fall asleep during the retention period. Usually, needles are retained for about 20-40 minutes depending on each individual’s condition.
Other modalities of treatments such as gua sha, cupping, or moxa will be discussed with you prior to application and when deemed necessary.
Follow up sessions are usually 1 hour. We will talk briefly about your previous treatment and anything that happened in the following days. We will work on fine-tuning your treatment plan and recalibrate your system.
The filiform acupuncture needles are very thin, 10x thinner than the hypodermic needles used at the doctor’s office. When the acupuncture needle is inserted into the acupuncture points, there may be a sensation of slight prick, similar to getting a mosquito bite. This feeling is generated by the energetic quality of the acupuncture points. You can think of each acupuncture point as an entrance into a certain energetic vortex in the body. When the needles are inserted into the energetic vortex, you can disperse or tonify the energy required in the body for optimum health.
Yes. Acupuncture has minimal side effects. It works with the energies inherent in one’s own body to create balance and optimum functioning. Needles used in our office are sterile and disposed of after a single use.
Generally, we recommend 5 or 6 sessions on a weekly or 2x/a week at the beginning to get the full benefits of treatment. Once the chief complaint is resolved, many people move onto our preventive care program, which is a monthly or bimonthly visit.
An acute condition, such as a recently sprained ankle or recent symptoms will most likely require about 3-5 visits depending on the severity of sprain or symptoms. Chronic conditions, back aching for 10 + years, or more serious health issues that have longer duration will required longer, more regular treatments.
For chronic conditions, remember that your body has been dealing with them for a long time, and in compensating, has created a circuit to hold the ailment at bay. Often in chronic conditions, I see patients complain that their pain or symptoms came back 3 days after their treatment. This is your body going back to the old pathological circuit because the new pattern has yet to set in. In order to get the new pattern to settle in, you need to keep up the treatments and teach the body how to function in this new state without reverting to the “old” pathological holding pattern. Often, we also have to make life-style changes to experience lasting healing state.
